B编者 o2011 4年 月 o kT h r e e 2CONTENTSBo LESSON ONE1 oVideo Watching Living Aboard Space Shuttle2kText AThe Magic Machine — Computer4DialoguesExpressing One’s Opinions8Word Studyread, give8GrammarThe Non-finite Forms of the Verb10The Infinitive11Exercises16Text BMen and Machine25 LESSON TWO29Video Watching Health and Exercise30 TText ALearning from Japanese Success32DialoguesTalking About One’s Problems36 hrWord Studylike, hear36eGrammarThe Past Perfect Tense38Exercises39Text BThe Museum of Failures47 e LESSON THREE51Video Watching Complaining52Text AA Letter of Complaint54DialoguesExpressing One’s Certainty and Doubts58Word Studyask, seem59GrammarThe Noun Clause60The Object Clause60Exercises62Text BA Business Letter701LESSON FOUR75 BVideo Watching Graduation Ceremony76Text AThe Day I Flunked out of Law School78DialoguesComforting Others82 oWord Studylose, fear83GrammarThe Attributive Clause II85 oExercises87Text BStarbucks94 k REVISION EXAMINATION (One~Four)97LESSON FIVE103Video Watching Amazing Mom with No Arms104Text AErnest Hemingway106DialoguesAn Encounter110Word Studysave, earn111GrammarThe Subject Clause113 TThe Subject Complement Clause113 hExercises114Text BHistory of Nursing120 r e LESSON SIX125 eVideo Watching 24 Hours in Waikiki126Text AIn the Garage128DialoguesTalking About Entertainment132Word Studyremind, know133GrammarThe Present Perfect Continuous Tense135The Past Perfect Continuous Tense136Exercises137Text BLife Is a Test. Many laymen have an exaggerated picture of swhat computers are capable of. Sometimes computers are o5called “electronic brains” and this is confusing, because nocomputer so far built can compete with the human brain in n1all respects .Let us take a look at the applications of computers incommerce and industry. Today, I shall discuss three of the10main areas, and I shall give some examples of each. I thinkyou should note the examples, but don’t bother too much Oabout the details of each example. nFirstly, clerical work. Computers are very good forhandling repetitive clerical work efficiently. We can take e15two examples of this. The first is the widespread useof computers in handling PAYROLLS, that is, payingemployees. Details about each employee (his salary, his tax-code etc.) are fed into the computer. The computer makesthe necessary calculation and prints out a pay slip.20Another example of the same sort of process has beenthe use of computers by banks to provide up-to-date recordsof clients’ accounts.Secondly, we have the use of computers in informationsystems. The most successful use of these is perhaps the 4 use of computers by airlines to control seat reservation and25provide information about flights. British Airways BOADICEA system has 200 terminals in 70 differentL countries. The main computer store for BOADICEA has a constant record of the details of every flight, including thees number of seats available and the names of passengers302 who have already booked .Thirdly the computer as an aid to design planning. Mys first example has to do with predicting the cost of a designo if one is planning to build a road. One could take a series of photographs of the area; from these, the amount of rise and35n fall of the landscape can be analysed to within a few inches. This information can be fed into a computer, along with3 details about what different areas would cost to buy etc . From all this, the computer can be programmed to work out the cheapest route between two points.40OnMy second example has to do with predicting faults in a design. It is possible to produce by computer methods pictures of what the road will look like at one metree intervals4. It is possible to film each of these as a separate frame, and film them in sequence. In this way, one can spot45 design faults before the actual construction of the road ever begins.New Words and Expressions layman // n. 的electronic // a. Sometimes computers are called “electronic brains” and this is confusing, because e no computer so far built can compete with the human brain in all respects.

例如:o The gases (that are ) sent into the air by the chemical works are poisonous.n化工厂释放到空气中的氧气是有毒的。 The trees of friendship (which were ) planted by the foreign visitors are growing well. 2. The main computer store
